Bienvenue! How to be a Great Host.
Like most travel junkies, the team at See Jane Fly loves a posh hotel. But given the choice between a luxurious inn or friend's air mattress, we'd crash at the friend's pad every time. There's something so comforting about being welcomed into a loved-one's home (not to mention the fact that they won't charge you $5 for your nightly chocolate fix).
Naturally, we're more than happy to return the favor and open our doors to family and friends. But we've learned there's more to being a great host than putting out clean towels. Here are some pointers on how to turn your humble abode into a welcoming oasis for overnight guests.
*Give Them the Grand Tour*
Whether you live in a sprawling chateau or a cramped studio, houseguests will appreciate a guided tour of your crib. Put your guests at ease by showing them the lay of the land and pointing out where they'll be sleeping. You can also use this time to show them the trick to turning on the shower and how to work all those pesky remotes.
*Put out a Pineapple*
Pineapples have been a symbol of hospitality since the 17th century, when the tropical fruit was rare and presenting one to guests was the height of generosity. Let your guests know they're welcome by a lighting a pineapple scented candle, like this delicious smelling one from Illume Candles. Or take a clue from hotels, and provide your guests with charming guest stationary with a pineapple motif.
*Let Them Eat Cake*
Keep the fridge stocked with healthy snacks such as pre-cut fresh fruit (pineapple, perhaps?) as well as a few indulgent treats. If possible, stock up on regional foods that your friends might not have access to—like winter-ripe berries in California or perfection in bagel form in New York City. And don't assume your guests like what you like; your beloved soy milk might turn their stomach. Be kind and place a carton of low-fat milk in the fridge as well.
*Enjoy The Finer Things*
Think about the little niceties a hotel provides like toiletries and mints on the pillow and make sure your guests get the same goodies at your home. Next time you're traveling, nick any unopened mini-bottles of shampoo and conditioner from your hotel (like the fancy products from Fresh on offer at The Hollywood Roosevelt) and place them in a little basket in the bathroom.
*Rise and Shine*
Provide your house guests with an alarm clock and find out what time they'd like be up to avoid any awkwardness in the A.M. We love this charmingly retro alarm clock from L.L. Bean that awakens your friends with a warm glow. Not a bad way to start their vacation.
