Finding Nemo
Pixar couldn't have dreamed this place up.
Featuring one of the world's largest living coral reef displays, a four-story living rainforest dome, a swamp inhabited by an albino alligator, a planetarium and a living roof, the newly re-opened California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park is a must-see.
The aquarium alone—housing thousands of fish, sharks, rays, reptiles, amphibians and insects—gives an unparalleled view of aquatic life. (And little Nemo fans will love spotting clownfish in the floor-to-ceiling coral reef tank.)
While the Planetarium shows are popular, younger kids aren't admitted, so take them instead to the 3-D Bugs! movie. Filled with critters from Borneo, it's captivating enough to keep even the most restless kids mesmerized.
Looking to beat the crowds? Because the Academy is one of the city's newest hotspots, it still draws big crowds on weekends, so try to visit during the week. If you're a frequent visitor to San Francisco, consider a membership—it quickly pays for itself and you'll enjoy members-only hours and express admission. And unless you're on a budget, avoid the Academy's free days (third Wednesday of the month), when huge crowds can make it hard for little ones to get up close to the tanks.
Follow up your visit with a picnic in the park's picturesque Shakespeare Garden nearby, or head over to 9th and Irving for some great eateries (we love Park Chow for its all-American fare and kid-friendly vibe, and Hotei for its huge noodle bowls and speedy service). If you're craving sushi (we're sure it has nothing to do with the aquarium), don't miss local favorite Ebisu for some of the city's best.
