Appointment-only gems

Gundlach Bundschu Winery

2000 Denmark St., Sonoma; 707-938-5277; www.gunbun.com
Gun Bun offers visitors the opportunity to learn about sustainable vineyard practices from a vintner that's been employing earth-friendly techniques for a long time. Choose between the cave tour ($20) and the two-hour vineyard excursion ($40). The small group size and staff's visible pride in the wines make this a very appealing tour.

Robert Biale Vineyards

4038 Big Ranch Rd., Napa; 707-257-7555; www.robertbialevineyards.com
At this intimate winery a bit off the beaten path, you'll sample some of the finest Zinfandels in Wine Country. The personable staff keeps pouring, and the pleasant alfresco setting is relaxing, encouraging you to linger. Ask to try their Party Wine, which isn't sold in stores. We're pretty sure you'll walk away with a bottle or two for your next shindig.

Quintessa

1601 Silverado Trail, Rutherford; 707-967-1601; www.quintessa.com
This is classy wine tasting at its very best. You'll start the tour off with a complimentary bottle of Voss water, and then be guided through the beautiful winery. You'll get to taste from barrels as you learn about the land and wine-production process, and you'll get to enjoy some delectable nibbles from featured chefs in the area. Although it's a bit on the pricey side ($45), we think it's well worth it, especially if you plan to only visit a few places.

Del Dotto Vineyards

1055 Atlas Peak Rd., Napa; 707-963-2134; www.deldottovineyards.com
Del Dotto's tour is more of an interactive experience than your standard Wine Country tour. You'll learn about the winemaking process, taste as you tour, and get the chance to sample straight from barrels, which is the best way to learn about the complexity of flavors. The staff is warm and welcoming, so you won't feel like an outsider here. Splurge on the hour-long Cave Experience and Barrel Tasting tour ($40). You'll get the chance to sample their best wines, alongside chocolate truffles and cheese, and finish with a sampling of their mouthwatering ports.

Kelham Vineyards

360 Zinfandel Lane, St. Helena; 707-963-2000; www.kelhamvineyards.com

They say location is key. And in Kelham's case, nothing could be more true. Situated on rare but highly coveted Bordeaux-producing land, Kelham offers a wine-tasting experience like no other. Other well-known vintners, including Duckhorn and Cakebread, have even utilized Kelham's grapes for their fine reserves. Talk about fancy! Don't be put off when you walk in - it's not the most glamorous wine-tasting room in Napa (it's only got one table), but the fabulous wines, hospitable and knowledgeable staff and gorgeous grounds make up for it. Tastings start at $20.
