If you're hoping to keep your New Year's resolution to save money and lose weight, skip the steak house and head to Rainbow's End Natural Foods. Located near the strip, this healthy grocery store and cafe offers plenty of vegetarian and vegan options.

If you're not from So Cal, the thought of a fish taco might sound bizarre. Think again. These tasty little tacos will have you thinking normal tacos are for the fishes (no pun intended). If you can't get down to Baja (a bit far for a taco) to get an authentic off -the-street fish taco, then Rubio's is the next best thing. This fast food eatery serves up a great fresh lunch, not to mention they serve up budget-friendly dinners and their kid-meals will satisfy even the pickest of eaters. The restaurants are scattered throughout San Diego, but you'll most likely find yourself at the one in Mission Bay since it is close to the beaches and the original -- beware, parking at this little local hole-in-the wall can be tricky, but it's worth it.

Trying to please everyone in the family? Head to this low-key Little Italy deli for an Italian meal to go. Choose from pizzas, calzones, pastas, or try one of their famous sandwiches. Both locations are used to the “to-go” crowd, so ordering to go is a breeze. If we have little ones with us we like to order from the sides and starters for pint-sized appetite.

Instead, grab the order to go and enjoy a gourmet picnic at Balboa Park, just a short drive away. The home-made pesto sandwich with gouda cheese, tomato and arugula is justifiably popular.

The Meatloaf Bakery
