The eight-year-old steakhouse at the Palms is still one of the sexiest restaurants in town. Carnivores will love the excellent steaks—but save room for the massive, childhood-nostalgia-inducing desserts, like ‘smores or the sublimely simple carrot cake.

Old Town

Old Town is a must-see in San Diego. The buildings are some of the oldest in California's. Besides family pleasing museums, Spanish-style buildings, and day-and-night festivities, the real attraction here is the Mexican food. Head to the area called The Fiesta de Reyes, known for its great shopping and free live music, plays, and dancing that everyone in the family will enjoy.

For a bay view and fresh, delicious seafood, you can’t go wrong with The Fish Market. The kids’ menu offers items like shrimp cocktails with french fries and standards like pizza, while parents can tuck into more upscale dishes like oysters, fresh Ahi poke or cashew-crusted rainbow trout.

These sister restaurants enjoys perfectly unobstructed views of the San Diego harbor and the city skyline. To make the most of the menu, share a few starters (the crispy artichoke hearts and the clams with oregano, parmesan and smoked bacon are especially good).

The Prado at Balboa Park

Set in the middle of historic Spanish-style Balboa Park, the Prado offers up a distinctly San Diego experience. Sit on the large outside patio for a view of the gardens (which are heated on cooler nights). The food is a perennial pleaser—with a fresh, flavorful menu of beloved Italian-inspired classics. If you’re on your own, grab a seat in the bar area and choose from appetizers and panini sandwiches. Keep in mind that if you arrive during happy hour (4 to 6 pm and 8 to 10 pm Tuesday through Friday), you may have to wait for a table or a seat at the bar.

Indigo Grill

For a sure-fire bet, book a table at this reliable local favorite. Located in Little Italy, Indigo Grill’s menu is eclectic (with options ranging from jalapeno-cilantro pappardelle to hickory to apple smoked pork ribs), but consistently bold and flavorful. The vibe is classy, but not stuffy. And the space can easily accommodate  small and large parties alike.

Cowboy Star

The refined food and tasty cocktails at this neighborhood steakhouse has made it a hit since its opening in 2008. And the tastefully done Old West theme—exposed beams‚ a few cowboy artifacts‚ and classic landscape photography—add some fun to the downtown scene. Looking to host a business dinner? Ask about the private dining room, which fits up to 18.

Candela’s San Diego
