Runyon Canyon

2000 North Fuller Avenue, Los Angeles; 323-666-5046; Runyon Canyon Website

Do the kids need to burn off some energy? A hike to the summit of Runyon Canyon will definitely do the trick. This popular 130-acre park winds uphill to a vantage point that overlooks the entire city as far as the ocean. It's not for the faint of heart—this is a serious uphill climb (and be warned, it's an off-leash dog area, and there are dozens of mostly well-behaved canines sharing the trail), but the vista is worth the effort. There is also a kids playground at the start of the trail for something a little more low-key.

Hike Griffith Park

4730 Crystal Springs Dr., Los Angeles; 323-913-4688; www.laparks.org

A hilly expanse covering thousands of acres, Griffith Park not only rewards hikers with great views (our favorite starts at the end of Commonwealth Blvd. and winds up the hill to a lookout before circling back to the start), but also offers other attractions, like the Griffith Observatory, golf courses, and tennis courts. Check out the website to plan your adventure, but be warned—you'll need a car to get around.

Go Car Tours

2715 Hyde St., 800-91-GoCar; www.gocartours.com

Once the kids see one of these nifty little carts zip by, you're finished, so you might as well check it out. Older kids will absolutely love it--and you'll probably find it pretty exhilarating too. It's touristy, but loads of fun. Just be careful--stay off major arteries, stick to smaller streets, and be extra cautious at intersections.

Bike Tours

899 Columbus Ave., 415-229-2000; www.bikeandroll.com/sanfrancisco
Best for older families, a bike is a refreshing way to see the city. Venture out on your own or join one of the many tours on offer. Tip: whatever you do, don't go over the Golden Gate! It might seem like a good idea, but it isn't.

Blazing Saddles

(Active tourism) 1095 Columbus Ave.; 415-202-8888; www.blazingsaddles.com Rent bikes, kids' bikes, tag-alongs, and trailers so the whole family can enjoy the ride no matter how young your tots are. Several locations along the waterfront. Tours too.

iFly Hollywood

Universal Studios CityWalk, 100 Universal City Plaza, Los Angles | Universal City; 818-985-4359; www.iflyhollywood.com
Looking for something really different to do with the kids? This indoor skydiving center is sure to leave a lasting impression. After donning a puffy fly suit and getting a quick training, you and the kids will have the chance to be blown up into the air inside a giant vertical wind tunnel. It truly feels like flying, and even three-year-olds can do it.
