Biking, hiking & kayaking

Kayak Chicago

Chicago; 630-336-7245; www.kayakchicago.com

Your family can get in sync on the water while paddling your way on the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Take part in various tours, join in on a lesson or just rent your own equipment and paddle around the beaches. Kids 12 and older can paddle a single kayak on their own; younger kids can team up with a parent or sibling in a tandem model.

Bothe-Napa Valley State Park

Hit up a few top-notch wineries like Charles Krug, located just down the street, before heading over to Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. Shaded by redwoods and Douglas Fir, the trails here are a great way to experience the true beauty of Napa. Enjoy your picnic beneath the towering trees after hiking up to Coyote Peak for a breathtaking view.

Getaway Adventures

Getaway Adventures tours are led by an experienced team of experts in wine, restaurants and the history of Napa Valley and Sonoma. Their most popular tour is the Calistoga Sip 'N' Cycle. If it is super-hot out, opt for the Pedal and Paddle Tour, which allows you to experience the Alexander Valley on bike and then float down the Russian River after a gourmet lunch. Heaven.

Calistoga Bike Shop

1318 Lincoln Ave., Calistoga; 866-942-2453; www.calistogabikeshop.com

The knowledgeable and friendly staff will get you set up with a comfortable bike and help you figure out where to go. This is an exceptional way to enjoy the gorgeous scenery (and burn off that dessert from last night) and a screaming deal at $10 an hour. Hit up local hangout Wappo Bar & Bistro (1226 Washington St., Calistoga; 707-942-4712; www.wappobar.com), just down the street, for some pre- or post-trip fuel.

Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park
