Luckily, time spent waiting for a flight needn't be time wasted. Airport shopping is no longer just picking up a paperback at a dinky bookstore. These days, airports rival malls for swanky shops and soothing spas. Here are See Jane Fly's favorite airports for indulging in a little retail therapy:
1.) London Heathrow Airport
Considering all its initial problems, Heathrow's Terminal 5 certainly got one thing right: the shops. British budget wonders like Accessorize and Boots stand alongside upscale Gucci and Prada. But the real jewel in Heathrow's crown is a branch of the world-famous Harrod's department store, where you can hire a personal shopper to create your perfect London look.
2.) John F. Kennedy International Airport
Skin-care junkies will cherish a free hour at JFK. Pick up your beauty basics from shops such as L'occitane, Clinique and Estėe Lauder then head to ExpresSpa for some pre-flight primping. Facials, waxing and manicures are all on offer, but it's the excellent foot rubs that will have you hoofing it back in a hurry.
3.) Portland International Airport
For great savings, Portland International can't be beat. The airport requires all shops to charge street prices, meaning goods can't be sold for more than would be charged outside the airport. That, along with Oregon's lack of sales tax, adds up to great value for savvy shoppers.
4.) Singapore Changai Airport
It should come as no surprise that the best airport in the world (as voted by the Business Traveler Awards) has some of the best places to spend money. Even those with the briefest of layovers can take advantage of Changai's massive "Shopping City" by pre-ordering goods from home and picking them up upon arrival.
5.) Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
If your meeting in Seattle left you feeling a bit gloomy, treat yourself at the Sea-Tac Airport. Indulge in a 30-minute neck rub at the Massage Bar in Concourse C then mosey over to butterLondon for a quick mani-pedi. Things are sure to look sunnier after all that pampering.
